In early June of this year, the Rutgers Department of Food, Agricultural, and Resource Economics hosted colleagues from the Northeast Agricultural and Resource Economics Association at the beautiful Molly Pitcher Inn in Red Bank, New Jersey.    

FARE was the official host of this scholarly conference, which is held annually by our discipline’s Northeastern affiliate.  Significant leadership was also provided by Professor Gal Hochman of the University of Illinois, who taught at FARE before moving to Illinois in 2024. 

FARE faculty, former FARE students, NJAES affiliates, and extension personnel were well-represented at the conference, participating in all its components.  In addition to regular research sessions, the four-day event included a post-conference workshop on Opportunities and Barriers for Rural Development in America’s New Energy Landscape. And on June 9th, at a plenary luncheon, four representatives of FARE and NJAES briefed our Northeastern neighbors on exciting initiatives going on at FARE, SEBS, and the Agricultural Experiment Station.

In a regular conference session, FARE Associate Professor Paul Gottlieb presents research on the housing and water protection impacts of the New Jersey Highlands Act.

The research that Professor Gottlieb presented was conducted with John Borrmann, a former M.S. student in the department, and two co-authors (one a former Rutgers graduate student) employed by Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. Here Gottlieb is pictured at the conference with Borrmann, who works as an economist for the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities.
